BROWNSVILLE, TX–A woman who grew up in Port Isabel has recently opened her own hair salon in Brownsville.
Kathryn Tijerina describes growing up in the small town as “a little hard.” Both of her parents were dropouts and she had to motivate herself to continue her education, she says. As a young lady, she wanted to be different, already dreaming of providing a better lifestyle for her children one day.
In high school, she realized becoming a hairstylist could be her calling and help her achieve that goal.
This realization came when she was an Athletic Trainer at the Port Isabel High School. During her interview with the PRESS, she reminisced on the days when she styled her fellow trainers’ hair in the locker room. Little did she know that one day she’d open her own salon.
She decided she wanted to receive more education on the art of hairstyling, so she went to cosmetology school in San Antonio in 2013. However, she returned to Port Isabel before graduating, and began continuing her education there the following year.
Whilst attending her courses, Tijerina became pregnant with her first child and had to step away from her education. After her son was born, feeling determined, she resumed her courses and eventually earned her license.
After a few years of working in the industry, Tijerina was finally able to start her own business. Kat’s Color Creations opened to the public March 19, 2024. Tijerina says it was worth the wait.
Wanting to broaden her horizons a bit and meet new people and clients, she decided to open her salon in Brownsville so that she could still stay close to her parents. Despite this, Tijerina says many of her clients are residents of Port Isabel.
Kat’s Color Creations is a modern salon, according to Tijerina, with a carefully curated aesthetic. Her suite is connected to her friend’s med spa, offering convenience to both of their clientele. Tijerina’s salon offers many services, including hair coloring, haircuts, balayage, perms for men and even access to a professional makeup artist. The connected med spa provides Botox, teeth whitening, lashes and lip filler amongst other services.
Since opening, business has been great so far with many repeat clients, says Tijerina.
Just like she dreamed of as a young woman, her children inspire her to keep going every day. She aspires to provide the highest quality of life possible for her kids.
Her daily goal is to provide the best service possible to every single one of her clients. She strives to cultivate an environment of healthy and comfortable communication, where clients are not afraid to share all of their wants and needs. Communication is extremely important to Tijerina when it comes to her business.
Currently Tijerina is leasing her suite, but she dreams of owning her own building one day.
She told the PRESS that she has a message for the young girls growing up in Port Isabel: “No matter how many times you fail, get up and keep pushing through, because the end result will be worth it.”
Kat’s Color Creations is located at 54 E Price Rd Suite 3, Brownsville and is open Tuesday through Friday.
