PIISD hires new principals

The Point Isabel Independent School District (PIISD) Board of Trustees held a regular meeting on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. Bertha L. Zamora, vice president, was absent.

The meeting was immediately turned into an executive session. After the executive session, it was announced that there will be no action on Item 1: discussion and possible action on Superintendent recommendation for renewals, proposed non-renewals and resignations of professional educator contracts.

Board member Andrew Le Blanc abstained from action on Item 2: Discussion and possible action of professional personnel report that includes employment, resignation, leave of absence, new hires, promotions and transfers for the month of July 2024. It was decided by the rest of the present board to hire two principals, Maria Ramirez and Valarie Le Blanc for the elementary schools, Garriga and Derry.

The board moved onto their action agenda. Starting with Item 3: recommend approval of payment to ERO, architectural services for the Phase 3 – Derry and Garriga Elementary New Construction, Trails & Site Improvements and Phase 4 – CATE Building at the High School, in the amount not to exceed $98,365.92.

Representatives from ERO and Gurlach presented the current updates. They said they are waiting for the TDLR reports to begin the final walkthrough of the auditorium. Theresa Capistran, Superintendent of Schools, mentioned complications with lighting in the auditorium. The representative from the companies said they will conduct a re-training. General issues were touched on concerning the ongoing construction projects. The payment was approved.

Item 4: recommending approval to change orders across the projects, and Item 5: approval for contractor fees, were approved.

Item 1: Recommend approval of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Brownsville ISD Adult Continuing Education Consortium for the 2024-2025 school year, was approved.

Angela Olivares, child nutrition and Food services director, announced the continuation of the fresh fruit and vegetable program. The program will provide elementary students with fresh fruit or vegetables twice a week, starting in October. It strives to make both local and exotic foods available to students who would not have them otherwise. Item 2: recommend approval of budget amendment #25-004 to appropriate the 2024-2025 Fresh Fruit Vegetable Grant beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, in the amount not to exceed $44,528.40, was approved.

Item 7: recommend approval of payment #001 for General Contractor Fees on the Point Isabel Tarpon Stadium Track to Beynon Sports Surfaces, INC in the amount not to exceed $100,453.41, was tabled until further updates.

No public comments were made at this board meeting.

A brief mandatory review was given regarding the ISSA, IDE and Perkins grants. The presentations broke down what each title does for the students and staff. The funds go to a range of benefits such as mental health, travel, certifications and pay.
