The Ninth-Annual Summer Causeway Run, brought to the area by Port Isabel’s Chamber of Commerce, might just be the best one yet.
The Chamber has announced an exciting twist: a new route this year, taking 10-k participants on a journey along South Padre Island’s stunning beach. Runners will start in Port Isabel at the Cultural and Events Center, cross the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway and end up at SPI’s Beach Water Park. Growing in numbers over the years, the Chamber says the route change was sparked by an increase of interest in the run and estimates over 2,000 runners to take part this year.
According to the Chamber, this run is for everyone of any age: seasoned runners or families just looking to have some fun together. Participants can walk as well as run.
The event is slated for Sept. 14, starting at 7 a.m.
According to Mary Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Chamber, the purpose of the run is to unite the community and promote a healthy lifestyle. She says first-time participants call it “an amazing experience.”
Her goal is to share the best of what Port Isabel and South Padre Island have to offer with people from all over the Rio Grande Valley.
Gonzalez says the Chamber has been busy prepping for the event, finding sponsors and promoting the event across South Texas.
The Causeway Run is one of the only times people have the opportunity to cross the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway on foot.
A portion of the proceeds raised from this event will go to scholarships for area students, as well as community events throughout the year.
