A new clinic in Laguna Vista has opened its doors for operation. A grand opening was held on Sept. 17 at its
location.
Speakers at the event included Laguna Vista Mayor Michael Carter, New Horizons’ Jason Wallace, State
Representative Janie Lopez, Congressman Gonzalez District Director Laura Matamoros and South Texas Deputy Regional Director for U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, Adrianeli Gomez.
A press release published by the New Horizon Health Center shared that Laguna Vista deals with a 19% poverty rate and at least 7,494 life years lost to health issues in Cameron County. The release said the clinic plans on providing “high-quality, comprehensive healthcare services to underserved communities.” The release promised the center would address family medicine and lab medicine, as well as having a bilingual staff.
Previously, the Laguna Vista area had a clinic run by the University of Texas at the Rio Grande Valley. The clinic provided medical care in an area that needed it the most, but it closed its doors on Dec. 1, 2023 to the dismay of many locals in the area. According to an article published by UTRGV, the clinic was part of the UTRGV School of Medicine’s attempt to provide more resources to the area.
According to their official website, New Horizons Health Center works to “provide quality comprehensive
primary health care services with excellence and dignity to our community regardless of their ability to pay.” The center has many focuses, ranging from immunizations to gynecology. They have locations scattered around the Brownsville area.
The new center is located at 723 Santa Isabel Blvd, Suite G, Laguna Vista. It will be open Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Wednesday. Interested parties can call (956) 548-7400 for more information.
