Highway improvements discussed

Special to the PRESS

On Friday, Oct. 11, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. met with Texas Department of Transportation [TxDot] Commissioner Alex Meade, Brownsville Mayor John Cowen, Port of Brownsville Chairman Steve Guerra, South Padre Island City Commissioner Joe Ricco, TxDOT District Engineer Pete Alvarez and officials from South Padre Island, Brownsville ISD and Point Isabel ISD to discuss potential safety and infrastructure improvements on SH 48.

Cameron County partnered with the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority [CCRMA] and the Port of Brownsville to conduct a Master Plan that would generate short- and long-term recommendations for SH 48. RRP Engineering was on hand to provide initial recommendations on the improvements to Judge Treviño and other officials.

Short-term recommendations include median barriers on the intersections of Chemical Road, Seatrium, Anglers Road, Jaime Zapata boat ramp and the Bahia Grande Proposed Parking. The long-term recommendations include grade separations at these and other locations along SH 48.

The Engineers will complete their study and formally submit to the CCRMA for further consideration and action. SH 48 is an on-system State Road which allows the County to look to TxDOT for project funding.
