Beloved local restaurant Chilitto Pikin Two has shut its doors after ten years, following the owners’, Maria Elena Jimenez and Edel Hernandes, decision to step away from the restaurant.
The restaurant opened its doors in 2014 and was family-owned and operated. It was initially known as Bubbas, located on South Padre Island, but later moved to Port Isabel and changed its name to Chilitto Pikin.
Yessica Cano is the General Manager of the restaurant and the owners’ daughter. She cited slow business and overworking as reasons for the owners stepping back.
“They’re really tired. There are hardly any workers, so they would be here all day by themselves working. It’s gotten to the point where it’s overwhelming” said Cano.
Cano voiced concern for her parents and their health.
“We don’t want her [Jimenez] to overwork herself or for anything bad to happen, so we decided it was time to step away,” said Cano.
The business will go forward in catering, which they already have an extensive history in, having served up to 700 people at a single event. Currently, the owners have no plans to completely step away from
working.
“I’ve always asked them, and they said they are so used to working, it’s never in their plans to stop working completely,” said Cano.
“I’m extremely proud of them and their journey throughout the years. But I am also glad they chose their health… that gives me peace of mind, to know they’re putting themselves first for the first time in a long
time.” said Cano.
Carno thanks loyal fans of the restaurant for their constant support throughout the years.
“I just want to thank them and say we truly appreciate their support and we hope to continue to be a part of their events,” said Cano.
Chilitto Pikin Two had its last day of operation on Nov. 15.
