The El Paseo Arts Foundation, a South Padre Island-based 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the arts, brought down The Reduced Shakespeare Company to perform a Christmas show at the SPI Convention Center on Dec. 9, 10 and 11. Dr. Laurie Coker, a local film critic, was invited to review the performance.
Tuesday night at South Padre Island’s SPI Convention Center was filled with laughter and festive cheer as The Reduced Shakespeare Company performed their cleverly written and hilariously witty The Ultimate Christmas Show (Abridged). This intimate production, brimming with sharp humor and physical comedy, presented by El Paseo Arts, brought holiday traditions to life in a lighthearted and highly entertaining way.
Reed Martin, a veteran and co-creator of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, headlined the show. The talented Michael Faulkner and Tre’ Zijman Tyler joined him, completing a dynamic trio that enthusiastically and energetically tackled every role in the performance.
The production’s premise was delightfully absurd. Set during the Annual Holiday Variety Show and Christmas Pageant at St. Everybody’s Non-Denominational Universalist Church, chaos erupted when none of the scheduled acts arrived. Left to fill the void, the three cast members improvised the entire pageant, delivering a fast-paced and uproarious look at holiday traditions through sketches, parodies and songs.
One of the highlights of the evening was the interactive audience participation. In addition to the charming and chaotic onstage antics, attendees were invited to bring wrapped gifts valued at $5 or less for a lighthearted audience gift exchange. I was even selected to join the cast on stage during one segment, adding a personal and memorable layer to the evening. Moments like these emphasized the sense of community and camaraderie that made this performance stand out.
Having seen Reed Martin perform live in the original Reduced Shakespeare Company production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), I found The Ultimate Christmas Show less surprising but no less clever. The witty dialogue, cultural satire, and sharp comedic timing showcased the brilliance of the script, even as it leaned on familiar holiday tropes. Based on audience reaction, the show was a hilarious success. The theater’s intimacy and the performers’ infectious energy truly elevated the experience. The audience’s laughter and involvement were palpable, creating a shared sense of fun and holiday spirit.
Zijman Tyler shone as a natural comedian, seamlessly engaging the audience while delivering his lines with impeccable timing. Michael Faulkner’s animated expressions and physicality brought an extra layer of hilarity to the show. At the same time, Martin’s veteran expertise provided a steady anchor to the production’s zaniness, demonstrating an underlying camaraderie and comic connection.
El Paseo Arts deserves special recognition for presenting this engaging performance, adding yet another gem to its impressive repertoire of events. Its commitment to bringing high-quality entertainment to the South Padre Island community is evident. With several winter shows lined up, it promises more opportunities to enjoy live theater in the months ahead.
While, for me, the surprises of their earlier productions weren’t as prominent here, The Ultimate Christmas Show (Abridged) proved to be a cleverly crafted and thoroughly enjoyable romp through the holiday season. Its mix of physical comedy, satire and audience involvement created a festive and unique experience that left the audience smiling from start to finish.
This hilarious holiday production was a wonderful reminder of the joy of shared laughter and theatrical fellowship, making it a standout highlight of the winter season.
