Twenty-seven-year-old Raul Aguilar opened Hedera Tropical Grill, taking place of Padre Rita’s Grill and Rita’s Restaurant, on South Padre Island, in early November 2024. Since then, he says he’s faced challenges escaping the reputation of the former eatery.
According to Aguilar, he aims to provide guests with new flavor profiles compared to other fried seafood options in the area.
“I feel like there are a lot of restaurants that are doing an excellent job with those types of foods…We wanted to bring something different,” said Aguilar.
Rather than the popular fried cuisine available across SPI, the grill infuses its food with fruits like mangos and pineapple to give guests a “healthier and creative” experience.
The restaurant is still early in its life and has seen its fair share of challenges. Aguilar said it’s been difficult to attract patrons due to the restaurant opening during the winter and Padre Rita’s reputation. Aguilar shared that many local sources spoke of a poor reputation attached to Rita’s, which has haunted Hedera Tropical Grill in its early days.
But still, the restaurant has managed to push on.
“Luckily, the winter Texans have been picking us up and we’re beginning to build a reputation,” said Aguilar.
