This past Thursday, Feb. 6, the Port Isabel powerlifting teams traveled to Rio Hondo to compete at the Bobcat Powerlifting Invitational.
The meet featured the following eight schools: Port Isabel, PSJA North, Santa Maria, Hidalgo, Valley View, Lyford, La Feria and Rio Hondo.
The following are the Port Isabel men’s results:
In the 114-weight class, Arnold Lopez won his third gold this season with a total lift of 1,010 lbs. (Squat:365, Bench:230, Dead Lift:415). Lopez had a small 5 lb. dip in total lift, but he is still ranked #2 in the regional rankings for his weight class.
In the 165-weight class, Giovanni Gonzalez came in fourth place with a total lift of 1,170 lbs. (Squat:480, Bench:280, Dead Lift:410).
In the 181-weight class, Noah Hernandez won silver with a total lift of 1,295 lbs. (Squat:510, Bench:335, Dead Lift:450). Also in the same weight class, newcomer Manuel Orozco came in seventh place with a total lift of 965 lbs.(Squat:425, Bench:275, Dead Lift:265).
In the 198-weight class, Joe Perez won his first gold of the season with a total lift of 1,300 lbs. (Squat:495, Bench:300, Dead Lift:505). On the heels of Perez was Jose Galvan who won silver with a total lift of 1,285 lbs. (Squat:540, Bench:295, Dead Lift:450).
In the 220-weight class, Arnulfo Hernandez won silver with a total lift of 1,250 lbs. (Squat:495, Bench:275, Dead Lift:480). Hernandez had the men’s team’s top total lift improvement, with a 40lb. increase from his previous meet.
Port Isabel had a trio of heavy lifters that “bombed out” last week, but came back to dominate their weight classes.
In the 242-weight class, Carlos Cabrera won his second gold of the season with a total lift of 1,695 lbs. (Squat:650, Bench:500, Dead Lift:545). Cabrera is currently ranked #2 in the region. Also in the same class, Mario Nava won bronze with a total lift of 1,510 lbs. (Squat:585, Bench:455, Dead Lift:470).
