On Wednesday, May 28, the Port Isabel Tarpons 7on7 team wrapped up their season playing in the Brownsville 7on7 league. The league was composed of the following six teams: Port Isabel, San Benito, Los
Fresnos, Bro. Hanna, Bro. Lopez, and Br. St. Joe. After four weeks of games, the top four teams advanced into bracket championship play.
In the previous week, PI won its final regular-season game and finished in first place in the team standings.
Unfortunately, the team got upset in its first game of the bracket play, to 4th place, Bro. Hanna, setting up
a final game versus the Los Fresnos Falcons.
The Tarpons opened the game with a long pass attempt by QB Bryan Martinez to speedster, Luis Ramos, but it was slightly overthrown. On the second play of the game, Martinez went back to Ramos and connected
on a 12-yard catch. Ramos turned that reception into a 45-yard catch-and-run touchdown after escaping from several would-be defenders. A successful catch by Bryan Ramirez during the extra point play gave the
Tarpons an early 7-0 lead.
The Falcons responded with a 3-play scoring drive, but missed the extra point as PI now led 7-6.
On the Tarpon’s ensuing drive, Ramirez outjumped two defenders and caught a long 37-yard pass, landing at the 1-yard line. Three plays later, Edward Garza scored on a 1-yard TD grab. An unsuccessful extra point
try gave the Tarpons a 13-6 lead.
Los Fresnos answered back with a 4-play scoring drive to make it a 13-13 tie game.
As the first half was winding down, PI scored once again with a 14-yard touchdown reception by Logan Bennett and the Tarpons headed into halftime with a 20-13 lead.
As the second half resumed, Los Fresnos’ drive stalled and they were forced to turn the ball over on downs.
Port Isabel opened their next drive with a 28-yard reception by Ramirez. A few plays later, Garza secured a 2-yard TD catch. Tarpons now led 26-13.
With five minutes left in the game, the Falcons struck again and closed the Tarpons lead to 26-20.
Port Isabel closed out the game with an 8-play scoring drive capped by a 13-yard TD reception by Miles Moore. Port Isabel won the game 33-20, securing a third-place finish.
Meanwhile, in the Championship game, San Benito defeated Bro. Hanna 28-20.
