South Padre Island is set to welcome Grouchy Gringo, the Southern Coastal Cajun-inspired restaurant, as it prepares to bring its bold flavors and offbeat charm across the causeway.

Owner Lance Deaton expressed excitement about the move. “I am looking forward to the opportunity presented by soon being located on South Padre Island,” he said. “I’ve loved my time in Port Isabel and all of the great friends I’ve met and made here, but feel the opportunity is too good to pass up.”

With over 30 years in the food industry, Deaton has long been hands-on in every aspect of his business.

When first reached for comment, he was perched on a ladder, painting walls in the new space himself—after already working a full day in the kitchen. The transition, he noted, hasn’t been easy, but it’s been fueled by a sense of possibility.

A key factor in the decision to relocate has been the prolonged street construction near the original Port Isabel site. What began as a short-term inconvenience gradually became a serious concern for the restaurant’s future.

“The day construction started, everything changed,” Deaton said. “Sales are down 31%. Foot traffic has slowed somewhat, but we weren’t in a high-foot-traffic area to begin with.”

Originally expected to last about three weeks, the construction extended well beyond that timeframe. “If our section had taken longer than expected, it could have killed my business,” Deaton said.

Despite ramping up advertising and social media efforts to maintain customer engagement, the impact significantly weighed in on his decision to move.

Grouchy Gringo has built a loyal following with its generous portions of Southern Coastal Cajun dishes such as jambalaya and Shrimp Alfredeaux, alongside popular weekly specials like the Wednesday burger and sandwich specials, Meatloaf Monday, and Flounder Friday. The restaurant’s distinctive and clever edge is reflected not only in the food but also in its witty menu names and atmosphere.

The new location boasts a larger and more efficient kitchen, two stages for live music, and plenty of parking. “We can’t wait to serve everyone in this newly renovated, fun, irreverent space,” Deaton said.

Grouchy Gringo will be located at 2213 Padre Boulevard on South Padre Island.
