Special to the PRESS
The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office is calling on residents and visitors to prioritize safety this summer.
This weekend, Alberto Lorenzo Galvan, 39, of Edinburg, drowned near Beach Access #5 while swimming. Despite CPR efforts by lifeguards and emergency personnel, Mr. Galvan was later pronounced dead at a
hospital in Brownsville.
District Attorney Luis V. Saenz expressed his condolences and reminded the public of the importance of responsibility during the busy summer season:
“What was meant to be a weekend of fun ended in unimaginable loss for several families. These tragic incidents serve as a powerful reminder that safety must always come first—whether in the water, on the roads, or at the beach. We urge everyone to stay vigilant and look out for one another this summer.”
The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office, in partnership with local law enforcement and first responders, will continue to advocate for community awareness and enforce the law to hold offenders
accountable—especially in cases involving reckless or impaired behavior.
Summer Safety Reminders from the DA’s Office:
*Do not drink and drive or operate vehicles on the beach while impaired.
*Watch children closely near the water and vehicle paths.
*Swim only in designated areas with lifeguards present.
*Obey all posted beach and traffic safety signs.
*Report dangerous behavior to law enforcement immediately.
Let’s work together to prevent further tragedies and ensure South Padre Island—and all of Cameron County—remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.
