A powerful explosion rocked SpaceX’s Starbase facility near Boca Chica late Wednesday night, sending shockwaves across South Texas and startling residents from Port Isabel to Harlingen. The blast, which
occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on June 18, was heard and felt in multiple cities, sparking concern across the region.
According to an official statement from SpaceX posted on social media, the incident occurred during a test of the company’s next-generation Starship vehicle—the same system intended for future missions to the
Moon and Mars. The vehicle was undergoing preparations for its tenth flight test when what SpaceX described as a “major anomaly” occurred on the test stand.
“On Wednesday, June 18 at approximately 11 p.m. CT, the Starship preparing for the tenth flight test experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase,” the statement reads. “A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for.”
Though no injuries were reported and no personnel were harmed, the force of the explosion was substantial enough to be heard for miles. Residents in Laguna Vista, Los Fresnos, and even parts of Brownsville
reported loud booms and shaking windows.
SpaceX says its team is working closely with local officials to secure the test site and assess the damage.
“There are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities,” the company stated, though it urged the
public to avoid the area while safing operations continue.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. The incident marks another dramatic moment in SpaceX’s ambitious and often risky Starship development program, which has seen both explosive failures
and historic successes in recent years.
For many South Texans, the blast was a startling reminder of the high-stakes nature of spaceflight development occurring just miles from their homes. While some residents have expressed growing concerns about safety and noise, others continue to support SpaceX’s presence as a symbol of innovation and economic growth for the region.
The Port Isabel–South Padre Press will continue to monitor this developing story.
