A salty hush lingers over South Padre’s early hours, before the beaches fill, before the sun shouts. Tucked gently into this coastal rhythm, something new has quietly opened its doors.
“I’m the founder of Isla Ballí,” said Alexandra Anzaldua, a gentle resolve threading her words. “This project is very close to my heart, it’s a concept I created to celebrate the culture, flavors, and energy of our region.” The restaurant blooms with intention. Not just a kitchen, but a calling.
Having lived in Brownsville for fifteen years, the Island, she said, has long been her refuge. “South Padre Island has always been our place to unwind, reconnect, and breathe a little deeper. Not just in summer, but
year-round. It holds so many special memories for my family,” she shared. “So opening Isla Ballí here feels like a natural extension of our love for this beautiful place.”
There’s something celebratory in the way she describes it, a quiet pride. The restaurant, she said, was envisioned as “a tribute to the rich blend of cultures that make this region so unique.” Mexican and American
flavors carefully braided together, but not overly dressed. “We’re offering fresh, flavorful brunch and lunch dishes with a creative twist.”
The energy of the Island itself had played a part in the decision. “The energy here is vibrant yet peaceful, and I felt it was the perfect place to bring Isla Ballí to life. I wanted to create something that felt rooted in the Island’s culture and rhythm, something that both locals and visitors could enjoy and connect with.”
A coastal calm was the aim. “Relaxed, welcoming… the kind of place where you can enjoy a slow brunch, a fresh lunch, or just good conversation,” Anzaldua explained. “Think coastal charm with a touch of
elegance, great music, beautiful dishes, and a genuine sense of connection.”
The food, a blend of comfort and lightness, was described with the same heartfelt clarity. “Isla Ballí offers a fusion of Mexican and American flavors with a fresh, creative twist. Our menu includes breakfast and
lunch options, from vibrant brunch dishes to grilled favorites all made with high-quality ingredients and lots of heart.”
“Yes! The name Isla Ballí is inspired by Padre José Nicolás Ballí, the original land grantee of the Island. I fell in love with the story and felt it was the perfect way to honor the Island’s rich history. It adds depth and meaning to everything we do we’re not just serving food, we’re celebrating the roots of this beautiful place,” Anzaldua said.
The spark behind the project, it seems, was never only about the food. “I’ve always believed food brings people together. Opening Isla Ballí was my way of combining my love for culture, wellness, community and
creating a space where people feel good, connect, and enjoy every bite.”
A varied path led her here—business, wellness, and nourishment overlapping. “My background is a mix of business, wellness, and food. I’m a Business Administration graduate, a certified health coach, and a
cooking expert for kids through a Stanford program. I also run JuiceUs, a growing restaurant brand in the RGV. But above all, I consider myself a ‘mompreneur’—my kids are my everything, and they inspire
everything I do, including Isla Ballí.”
Of course, not all came easy. “Yes, there were challenges, but I couldn’t have done this without my husband Ernesto and my amazing dream team. Every single person gave their heart to this project. Isla Ballí isn’t
just my dream, it’s the result of love, teamwork, and shared dedication of all of them.”
And what she hopes for, what she’s watching quietly unfold now, isn’t just popularity. It’s belonging.
“I hope Isla Ballí becomes a place people return to, not just for the food, but for how it makes them feel. A space filled with good memories, connection, and heart. I want it to grow into a local favorite, where both
visitors and Island & Port Isabel community feel truly at home,” Anzaldua said.
