Local business owner and community advocate Aarin Hartwell has officially announced her candidacy
for South Padre Island City Council, Place 2, bringing a blend of personal dedication and professional
experience to the campaign.
Hartwell’s roots on South Padre Island run deep. Originally from Brownsville, she has lived on and off
the Island for more than 25 years. Her mother, Penny Hartwell, was a teacher and nationally
recognized environmental activist who instilled in Aarin a lifelong respect for nature, beginning with
beach cleanups at Boca Chica as a child. Her father, Jack Hartwell, was a pool contractor and local
musician who passed away in 2019. After his passing, Hartwell chose to remain on the Island,
dedicating herself to her community, running her business, and raising her family.
In 2021, Hartwell met the love of her life, Brendan Jennings, who was visiting the Island while working
remotely. Later that year, the couple announced Hartwell’s pregnancy, and in July 2022, they
welcomed their son, Brixton Liam Jennings. Now three years old, Brixton is growing up surrounded by
the beaches and small-town charm that his parents love.
The couple has deep ties to the Island beyond family life, owning several properties including a
vacation rental, Hartwell’s business location, and their personal residence. Brendan Jennings is
Senior Executive Vice President at Yahoo Inc. and General Manager of AOL, while Hartwell continues
to grow her own business and expand her community involvement.
Hartwell has been active in South Padre Island’s business and environmental communities for years. She is the owner of SPI Sessions Watersports, a year-round watersports and education company,
and founder and director of Gulf Guardians, a nonprofit focused on sustainability and water quality
education. She has also served as Vice President of the Texas Gulf Surfing Association, coached the
South Padre Island Surf Team, and earned recognition as a Texas State and National Surfing
Champion.
Hartwell says her priorities for running are clear. She hopes to encourage smart, sustainable
development that strengthens local businesses and highlights experiences unique to the Island. She
emphasizes transparency and open communication so residents feel heard, while also investing in
community programs and creative industries such as film and eco-tourism. Responsible budgeting
that balances current needs with long-term stability is also at the top of her agenda.
“Our city is at a pivotal moment,” Hartwell said. “Together, we can build a future that is vibrant,
innovative, and environmentally responsible — while keeping our community spirit strong.”
Hartwell plans to spend the coming months meeting with residents, listening to their concerns, and
sharing her vision for the Island’s future as election season approaches.
