This past Tuesday, August 26, the 4A Port Isabel ECHS Lady Tarpons hosted the 6A Brownsville Veterans MHS Lady Chargers in a non-district volleyball match.

The Lady Tarpons have struggled to get out of the gate, compiling a 2-11 record leading up to the matchup with the Lady Chargers. Meanwhile, Vets had lost their last two games but were having more success overall, sporting a 7-5 record.

The first set started off very competitive as the teams traded points and exchanged leads several times. The girls were scrambling and diving for the ball all over the court. With PI’s Kymberlie Estrada serving, the Lady Tarpons gained a small 7-5 lead in the set.

The Lady Chargers came fighting back as the Lady Tarpons struggled to return the ball. As Bro. Vets extended their lead to 12-8, PI was forced to call a timeout in an effort to regroup.

After the timeout, Bro. Vets continued to roll until PI stopped their run at 16-9. As PI’s Nadia Flaig returned to the court, her spike was deflected and fell onto Vets’ side, making it 17-13. Flaig then had a block at the net, forcing Vets to call a timeout as their eight-point lead was reduced to three.

The teams kept going back and forth. A block by Flaig tied the game at 19-19. Unfortunately for the Lady Tarpons, Vets regained the lead and was able to keep Port Isabel at bay, going on to win the set 25-21.

The second set was just as competitive, but the Lady Tarpons didn’t have the depth of the much larger school and lost 25-19. Vets won the best-of-three-out-of-five match after taking the third set, 25-15.

Port Isabel ECHS will be hosting its annual “Volley By The Beach” tournament Thursday through Saturday, August 28-30. The tournament will feature 16 teams, which will be placed into four pools. PI will be in Pool 1 along with Brownsville Frontier, IDEA Donna, and Santa Maria. PI’s first match in pool play will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a 12 p.m. match, and the day will end with a 2 p.m. match.
