Cameron County officials are moving forward with a major utility upgrade at Isla Blanca Park aimed at modernizing infrastructure and enhancing the experience for visitors. As part of the project, the park’s interior campground will close October 1 for approximately one year while crews overhaul aging electrical, water, and wastewater systems.

During a spring public meeting, Parks Director Joe E. Vega reassured attendees that Isla Blanca Park would remain open throughout the project. “Isla Blanca Park will remain open and fully operational, with the exception of the RV sites under renovation,” he said. “All other areas, including the mile-long beach, beachfront pavilions, concessions, boardwalks, jetties, fishing spots, walking trails, boat ramp, amphitheater, and event center, will remain accessible to the public.”

The upgrades are intended to ensure the park can accommodate growing visitor demand and provide a safer, more reliable experience. “These improvements are being made so that everyone can continue to enjoy and stay at our beautiful Isla Blanca Park for generations to come,” Vega said.

To help offset the impact of the closure, 43 exterior RV sites south of Dirty Al’s Restaurant will remain available. Additional dry camping sites with access to a sewer dump station are also being introduced for visitors needing temporary alternatives.

Officials emphasized that the single-phase construction approach will save costs, improve public safety, and shorten the overall timeline. The project is expected to take approximately 12 months, weather permitting.

In a June 2, 2025, press release, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr., said, “We are incredibly proud to see Isla Blanca Park once again named the best beach in Texas. This recognition reflects the commitment of Cameron County to preserving and enhancing our coastal treasures for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.”

The competition was strong. Editors and travel experts at 10Best, part of the USA TODAY network, selected a list of top Texas beaches, then opened the vote to readers. Isla Blanca edged out Matagorda, Whitecap, and Malaquite beaches, with Rockport and Galveston Island State Park also landing in the top ten.

Even while the campground undergoes improvements, Isla Blanca Park continues to welcome visitors with its wide range of amenities. The park features a mile-long beach, a boat launch, two large beachfront pavilions, walking trails, and fishing jetties. A full slate of activities and community events are planned to keep the park vibrant, with the amphitheater remaining open for concerts and large gatherings. County officials stress that Isla Blanca offers far more than camping, making it a year-round destination for residents and visitors alike.
