Eighteen years ago, what began as a simple desire to share family artwork has grown into one of South Padre Island’s most inviting creative spaces. Artsea Gallery & Goods, now a beloved local gem, was founded by artist Wendy Hauschildt along with her mother and sister. Together, the trio created a place where their creativity and the community’s creativity could thrive.

“We wanted a place to show my artwork and my sister and brother-in-law’s pottery,” Wendy shared. “There were limited opportunities for the arts then, so we created our own.”

Originally located in Port Isabel, the gallery eventually moved to South Padre Island, where it has evolved into a lively fusion of handmade goods, curated art supplies, and intimate creative experiences.

Today, the gallery features the collective talents of its owners—Wendy, her mom, and her sister, whose artistic skills span crochet, paintings, drawings, printmaking, pottery, jewelry making, and candle making. The shop’s eclectic, deeply personal mix reflects the artistic spirit that runs through the family.

One of Wendy’s greatest joys is cultivating Artsea’s art supply section, designed to welcome artists of all ages and skill levels. “I love having approachable art supplies and creative making kits,” she said. “I’m also happy to give advice to people who have a creative impulse but aren’t sure where to begin.”

At the heart of the gallery is the cozy and inviting Art Room, a space intentionally designed to spark imagination. Rather than the quiet, formal feel of a traditional gallery, the Art Room encourages guests to sit, talk, and engage with the art around them. “It’s very casual and inviting and less intimidating,” Wendy explained.

Artsea’s commitment to creativity extends into the community. Wendy currently has an exhibit of her paintings at Karma Coffee & Books titled The Night Cafe, part of her ongoing mission to bring art into everyday public spaces. Her playful yet technically skilled oil paintings, described as “serious paintings of unserious subjects,” can be previewed on Instagram at @coffeehouseanimals.

What truly sets Artsea apart is its intimate, family driven identity. As a small business rooted in authenticity and accessibility, Artsea prides itself on offering quality handmade pieces at prices that allow everyone to take home a bit of art.

“Artsea really is a fun little business that invites conversation and humor,” Wendy said. “We want everyone to have some little piece of art to take home.”

With its warm atmosphere, imaginative spirit, and commitment to making creativity approachable, Artsea continues to stand as a vibrant hub of artistry and connection on South Padre Island.
