Emergency response teams have been activated following a sudden drop in water temperatures that has caused a cold stun event among sea turtles in the Laguna Madre. Water temperatures fell below the critical threshold at 1 a.m. Tuesday, putting the turtles at risk.

Sea turtles are cold-blooded, meaning their body temperature is tied to the surrounding water. When temperatures drop below about 50 degrees, turtles become lethargic, lose the ability to swim, and may float to the surface or wash ashore. In this state, they are vulnerable to predators, boat strikes, and other hazards, and survival depends on rapid recovery and care. Cold stun events are most common in winter and can affect large numbers of turtles at once.

Rescue teams have deployed boat and foot patrols to locate and recover immobilized turtles. “Our primary goal right now is recovery and stabilization,” said Wendy Knight, CEO of Sea Turtle, Inc. “Timing is critical. The faster we can move these turtles into controlled, warm environments, the greater their chance of survival.”

Sea Turtle, Inc. reported that more than 300 turtles have already been recovered, with additional animals expected to be rescued as patrols continue. The organization received support and encouragement from the community. Thomasene Hodnett said, “Wow, you really have lots coming in. Good work done by the best people. Thank you each and everyone.” Terri L. Wilson asked, “Do you think the turtles learn to come in to the area by you because they know you help them?”

The public is asked to stay vigilant but not to handle turtles themselves. Anyone who encounters a cold-stunned turtle should immediately call the stranding hotline at 956-243-4361. Turtles should not be returned to the water or touched. For additional ways to help, including donations, visit seaturtleinc.org/donations.
