This past Saturday, February 14, the Port Isabel ECHS track teams traveled to Brownsville to compete in the 71st Annual Sams Relays. Although Port Isabel sent a small contingent of athletes, they still manage medal in some events.
The men’s division featured 12 schools participate from Brownsville and the surrounding area. The following are the PIECHS athletes’ results.
In the 400 Meters run, Mikel Sosa came in 8th place in with a time of 56.44s setting a new season record (SR), while Jesus Ramos came in 10th with a time of 57.50s, setting a new personal record (PR).
In the 800 Meters run, Jorge Garcia came in 7th place with a time of 2:15.15 (PR). Garcia also competed in the 1600 Meters run where he finished in 5th place with a time of 5:01.15 (SR).
In the 4×100 Relays, the PI team of Ivan Medina, Kevin Garcia Mendez, Luis Ramos, and Christian Hernandez won the bronze medal with a time of 46.40s. The same group then ran the 4×200 Relays and came in 5th place with a time of 1:40.51.
In the field events, Jahi Vasquez finished in 5th place in the Shot Put with a distance of 37’-09.00” (PR). Vasquez also came in 5th in the Discus with a throw of 113’-0”.
In the Long Jump event, Luis Ramos won bronze with a distance of 20’-09.00” (SR).
The men’s’ top three order of finish were, Harlingen, Los Fresnos and Brownsville Veterans. Port Isabel finished in 7th place.
Track coach Wen Moore was pleased with his athletes’ performances. “The team did very well. It was a meet dominated by 5A and 6A schools, and our boys competed well.” Said coach Moore. “It was a good performance and a great way to start the season.”
Meanwhile, the women’s division featured 10 schools from the same pool. The following are the PIECHS athletes’ results.
In the 100 Meters run, Elizabeth Hamilton came in 17th with a time of 15.26s (PR).
In the 800 Meters run, Lizbeth Perez came in 5th place with a time of 2:40.06, and Julieta Ruiz came in 7th with a time of 2:44.55.
In the 1600 Meters run, Isabella Betancourt came in 6th place with a time of 6:26.37 (SR).
In the 300m Hurdles, Madilynn Zamaron won bronze with a time of 56.07.
In the Pole Vault event, Isabella Bentancourt won the silver medal with height of 7’-00.00” (SR), with Jackie Nava coming in 3rd place.
In the Long Jump event, Lizbeth Perez came in 8th place with a distance of 14’-03.00”.
In the Triple Jump event, Isabel Ochoa came in 4th place with a distance of 32’-01.00” (PR).
The women’s top three order of finish were, Harlingen, Los Fresnos and Brownsville Hanna. Port Isabel finished in 6th place.
Women’s track coach, Ceci Trejo as also pleased with her athletes’ performances. “We competed with a smaller squad than usual, and it turned out to be one of the windiest track meets we’ve experienced. The conditions were definitely challenging, but the girls handled them with focus and determination. Despite the strong winds, they performed well and represented our team with pride.”, said coach Trejo.
The PI track teams next track meet will be the Los Fresnos Relays on February 27.
