The Port Isabel ECHS hosted their annual “Tarpon Relays” this past Saturday, March 6. The meet featured 11 schools located throughout the RGV from the 3A to 6A ranks.
The following are the PIECHS boys’ results:
In the 100 Meter Dash, Armani Reyna came in 16th place with a time of 12.18 seconds.
In the 200 Meter Dash, Luis Ramos won the bronze medal with a time of 23.18 seconds, and Tristan Green came in 18th with a time of 25.32s.
In the 400 Meter Dash, Aidan Ramos finished in 4th place with a time of 54.98 seconds, Jesus Ramos came in 13th with a time of 57.02s, and Mikel Sosa came in 22nd with a time of 1:00.21 minutes.
In the 1600 Meter Run, Jorge Garcia won bronze with a time of 4:46.97 minutes.
The PI 4×100 Relay team came in 4th place with a time of 45.95 seconds. The 4×200 Meter Relay team came in 6th with a time of 1:37.59 minutes, and the 4×400 Meter Relay team came in 7th with a time of 4:11.51m.
In the Long Jump event, Aidan Ramos finished in 4th place with a distance of 20’-6.50”, L. Ramos came in 8th with a distance of 20’-1.00”, and Kadyn Sanchez came in 12th with a distance of 18’-3.50”.
In the Triple Jump event, Willy Mosqueda came in 14th place with a distance of 35’-11.50”.
In the Shot-Put event, Jahi Vasquez won bronze with a throw of 42’-10.50”.
The following are the PIECHS girls’ results:
In the 100 Meter Dash, Angely Diaz won bronze with a time of 13.62 seconds, Evelyn Gonzalez came in 6th with a time of 13.70s, Isabel Ochoa came in 10th with a time of 14.19, and Elizabeth Hamilton came in 17th with a time of 15.34s.
In the 200 Meter Dash, Itzel Vela came in 7th with a time of 28.97 seconds, Gonzalez came in 13th with a time of 29.85s, and Ochoa came in 16th with a time of 30.64s.
In the 400 Meter Dash, Julieta Ruiz came in 5th place with a time of 1:07.00 minutes.
In the 800 Meters Run, Lizbeth Perez came in 4th place with a time of 2:31.95 minutes, and Nicole Sanchez came in 7th with a time of 2:41.24m.
In the 1600 Meter Run, Isabella Betancourt came in 8th place with a time of 6:27.76 minutes, and Mia Lopez came in 9th with a time of 6:30.34m. Lopez also competed in the 3200 Meter Run and finished in 7th place with a time of 14:46.97 minutes.
In the 100 Meter Dash, Layla Mata won the silver medal with a time of 15.83 seconds. Right on her heels was Elle Wall who won bronze with a time of 16.51s. Also competing in the event were Vela (6th/18.70s), Raylinn Aguilera (12th/19.52s), and Sahara Gonzalez (15th/19.81s).
Mata then the gold medal in the 300 Meter Run with a time of 47.78 seconds. She was joined by S. Gonzalez (5th/54.99s), Madilynn Zamaron (8th/55.70s), and Aguilera (13th/58.88s).
The 4×100 Relay team came in 4th place with a time of 52.51 seconds. The 4×200 Relay team won silver with a time of 1:48.32 minutes, a fraction of a second from first place San Benito (1:48.23m).
The PI relay teams continued to hold their own as they won bronze in the 4×400 Relay with a time of 4:29.69 minutes.
Wall won her first gold medal of the meet in the High Jump event with a height of 5’-6”, while Mata came in 9th with a height of 4’-8”. Mata also won bronze in the Long Jump event with a distance of 16’-6.50”.
In the Triple Jump, Ochoa came in 4th place with a distance of 32’-9.50”, followed by Vela (11th/31’-7”), and Diaz (14th/31’-1.75”).
In the Pole Vault event, Jackie Nava was tied for 6th place with a height of 7’-6”, followed by Betancourt (8th/7’-0”), and Salma Carter (11th/6’-6”).
In the Discus event, Escarlett Urrutia won the silver medal with a throw of 112’-1”, and Precious Vasquez came in 6th with a throw of 102’-0”.
Urrutia closed out the field events by winning gold in the Shot-Put event with a throw of 38’-2”.
Girls’ track coach Ceci Trejo was pleased with her teams’ performance. “Our girls did outstanding at Tarpon Relays. We had many PRs in various events. Sophomore, Layla Mata set a PR and broke the Port Isabel High School girls track school record in the 300 hurdles.” Said coach Trejo. Furthermore, coach stated Port Isabel was girls’ team was “leading the 32-4A district in 12 of 17 events.”
The PI tracks teams will return to action on March 27-28 when the compete in the Meet of Champion track meet held in Harlingen (boys) and Weslaco (girls).
