A Rio Grande City man was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly fleeing from police and leading officers on a pursuit that resulted in a pedestrian being struck and hospitalized.

According to the South Padre Island Police Department, the incident began around 10:30 p.m. when officers attempted to stop a blue Nissan Sentra for speeding. The driver, later identified as Esteban Garcia III, reportedly did not stop, prompting a pursuit.

During the chase, authorities say a pedestrian was hit along Padre Boulevard and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of the individual’s injuries has not been released, and the incident remains under investigation.

Video circulating on social media appears to show the victim lying in the roadway as bystanders and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper moved in to assist.

The pursuit ended in the 3600 block of Padre Boulevard, where the vehicle crashed and Garcia was taken into custody.

Garcia faces charges including evading arrest with a motor vehicle, a third-degree felony, as well as driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, both misdemeanors. Police also reported he had an outstanding probation warrant out of Starr County.
