This past Tuesday, April 14 the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons softball team hosted their last home game against the RGC La Grulla Lady Gators during senior night.

The game started off with some early excitement as the Lady Tarpons closed out the first inning with a 4-3 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Tarpons added two more runs in the third as they took advantage of some throwing errors by the Lady Gators. The highlight of the inning was a base hit into the outfield by pitcher Arianna Garcia for a standup triple. PI extended their lead to 6-3.

In the fourth inning, La Grulla added six runs behind some solid hitting and a couple of PI errors as the Laday Gators jumped out to a 9-6 lead.

La Grulla added two more runs in the fifth inning as they now led 11-6. PI had some solid hits, but the Lady Gators strong defense proved too much.

In the final two innings, PI had some solid defensive play of their own by making some great outfield catches and some throw-outs at first. Unfortunately, Port Isabel’s offense continued to struggle as the Lady Gator secured the 11-6 win.

It wasn’t the outcome first year head softball coach Gilbert Rodriguez III wanted, but he expressed to his team that the season was not over yet. “As we prepare for the playoffs vs a powerhouse Zapata, I explain to the girls that now everyone has the same record 0-0. Win and advance to another week or lose and go home.” Said coach Rodriguez. “This is when the fun begins! Go Tarpon Softball!”

Heading into their Bi-District match, the Lady Tarpons will be facing off with the Zapata Lady Hawks in a one-game playoff. The game will take place on Friday, April 24 at the La Joya High School with a 7 p.m. gametime.
