City commissioners questioned equipment repair costs, reviewed parking improvements near a local baseball field, and discussed potential ordinance changes during a recent Port Isabel City Commission meeting held at the Port Isabel Event Cultural Center.
A key discussion focused on invoices submitted for equipment repairs. Commissioner Sandra Holland raised concerns about the cost of certain repairs after reviewing pricing.
“I looked into similar repairs, and the cost still seems high,” Holland said.
John Sandoval, Assistant to the City Manager/Fire Marshal, said many of the costs involve specialized work on small engine equipment, including lawnmowers, chainsaws, and other tools used by city crews.
Sandoval said the repairs often require specific parts and labor, though commissioners indicated they would like clearer documentation and better tracking of expenses moving forward.
The commission also discussed improvements near the city’s baseball field, where land south of the facility has been cleared to expand parking. Officials said the work was completed to accommodate increased use during games and events.
Commissioners also reviewed a proposed amendment to an ordinance regulating certain activities and time restrictions. The item, presented by City Manager Jared Hockema, focused on how increased weekend and seasonal activity has affected traffic, businesses, and residents.
Officials said early morning and high-traffic events have created congestion and public safety concerns, particularly near churches and local businesses.
Commissioners discussed extending seasonal restrictions, potentially from May through September, but took no final action.
The item remains under review as officials consider how to balance economic activity with residents’ quality of life.
The Port Isabel City Commission meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, with the next meeting scheduled for May 12 at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
