This past weekend, May 1-2, a handful of select athletes from the Port Isabel Early College High School girls’ track team competed in UIL 4A Region IV Track & Field Meet. The meet was held at Kingsville A&M and featured hundreds male and female athletes from around the region, all competing for a chance to qualify for the State Meet.
PIECHS own Junior track star, Elle Wall had qualified for five different events. Running in the 200 Meters Run, Wall came in 4th place with a time of 25.23 seconds*, setting a new personal best. Eleanor Kazanjian out of Kingsville King won the event with a time of 24.03.
In the 400 Meters Run (prelims), Lizbeth Perez came in 9th with a time of 1:01.00 minutes, a new personal best.
In the 300m Hurdles, Layla Mata came in 4th place with a time of 46.11 seconds*, a new personal best. Aubrey Avey out of Comal Canyon Lake won the event with a time of 44.75.
The Port Isabel 4×100 Relay team of Wall, Perez, Mata, and Angely Diaz finished in 10th place in the prelims with a time of 50.50 seconds*.
In the 4×400 Relays, the PI team of Wall, Perez, Mata and Nicole Sanchez finished in 4th place with a time of 4:01.69 minutes*, improving on their 4:15.34m run in the prelims.

Meanwhile in the field events, Escarlett Urrutia came in 6th place in the Discus with a throw of 117’-8” and in 10th place in the Shot Put with a throw of 33’-3”. Brady Stickler out of Fredericksburg won both events with throws of (137”-7” Discus) and (38’-10.50” Shot Put).
In the High Jump event, Wall came in 10th place with a height of 4’-10”. Harper Phillips out of Lago Vista won the event with a height of 5’-5”. Wall had a previous best of 5’-6” which would have been good for first place at the meet.
Competing in the Long Jump event, Wall came in 13th place with a distance of 17’-0”. Kazanjian won the event with a distance of 19’-10.25”.
“We are really proud of how our team competed at the Regional Meet. The girls showed a lot of heart and represented our program well. Overall, it was a great season. This group continued to improve, compete hard, and support each other every step of the way.” Said girls track coach, Ceci Trejo. “Looking ahead, we’re excited for next year. We return a solid group, and the experience from this season will help us keep growing and improving as a program.”
