The waters off South Padre Island are gaining national recognition for red snapper fishing, and local captains say years of reef-building efforts in the Gulf may be helping fuel the growing reputation.
Earlier this month, FishingBooker named South Padre Island one of the top red snapper fishing destinations in the Gulf for 2026, citing the area’s productive offshore waters, nearshore reefs and strong tourism appeal.
But according to local fishing captains, the thriving fishery is also being supported by an ambitious artificial reef project taking shape just offshore.
About 13 miles beyond the jetties, nonprofit conservation group Friends of RGV Reef has spent years building what organizers describe as the largest artificial reef system off the Texas coast, covering more than 1,650 acres in the Gulf.
The project uses retired vessels, concrete debris, railroad pilings and sections of the old causeway to create underwater reef habitats designed to attract marine life and strengthen fish populations.
Captain Rudy Castro of Rudy’s Adventures said the reef system has become increasingly important for offshore species like red snapper.
“They haul all the materials out to the Gulf and make basically fish nests,” Castro told the PRESS. “For red snapper and different offshore species over the years, I guess it’s been working.”
Castro said South Padre Island’s fishing conditions already make the area one of the strongest year-round fisheries on the Texas coast.
“Fishing on the island is always good year-round because of the weather climate down here and the clear Florida-like waters,” he said.
According to FishingBooker, the 2026 federal for-hire red snapper season is expected to run longer than last year’s season, giving anglers additional opportunities offshore.
Castro noted that while red snapper are traditionally considered an offshore species, local fishermen have increasingly reported sightings closer to shore.
“The fish we caught was red drum, which is an inshore species,” Castro explained. “Red snapper is offshore, but I’ve been seeing them caught inshore now.”
FishingBooker ranked South Padre Island alongside several major Gulf Coast fishing destinations, including Galveston, Fort Walton Beach and Grand Isle.
The recognition comes as South Padre Island continues to grow as both a tourism and sportfishing destination, drawing anglers from across Texas and beyond for offshore trips targeting snapper, kingfish, mahi-mahi and other Gulf species.
