This Tuesday, May 26 the Port Isabel 7on7 team traveled to San Benito to compete in a 4-team 7on7 showdown. Although Port Isabel only had twelve players on their team, they stood toe-to-toe against the much larger teams from San Benito, Brownsville Memorial Veterans, and Edcouch-Elsa.
In the first game, PI came out firing and struck first as quarterback Grayson Estes found Mikel Sosa for the 5-yard touchdown reception. A successful catch by Jesus Ramos on the extra point try gave PI an early 7-0 lead.
On PI’s ensuing drive, Estes connected with Ramos on a 15-yard TD reception as the Tarpons now led 14-0.
The Greyhounds answered with a big gain down to the 1-yard line and eventually scored, but the Tarpons still carried a 14-7 lead into halftime.
The Tarpons defense continued their aggressive play as they nabbed an interception on the Greyhounds first drive of the second half.
Port Isabel’s offense struck again this time on a 45-yard TD from the QB to his younger brother Preston Estes. The Tarpons extended their lead to 21-7.
The Tarpons’ dominance continued as Estes connected with Ivan Medina on a 15-yard TD reception and Port Isabel now led 28-7.
San Benito got right back into it on a 45-yard catch-n-run touchdown and now trailed 28-14 with about five minutes left in the game.
The San Benito scored once more with about a minute left in the game, but it wasn’t enough as the Tarpons secured a 28-21 win over the Greyhounds.
After a short break, Port Isabel squared off against Brownsville Veterans and the Tarpons continued to flex their muscles against the much larger teams.
QB Estes once again connected with Ramos, then with Alvaro Rocha (2x), and Elijah Alvarez to seal a 33-18 win. PI also got a defensive touchdown from Alvarez off an interception return for a touchdown.
After another short break, the Tarpons faced off against Edcouch-Elsa, but fatigue set in for PI and they dropped their third game of the day.
Port Isabel will be hosting their annual 7on7 State Qualifying Tournament on Friday, June 5 at 9 a.m.
