The UIL high school football playoffs begin this week, starting this Thursday (Nov. 9) with a Class 5A-Div. II between PSJA Memorial and Weslaco at Weslaco. The Port Isabel Tarpons will play their first-round game against Orange Grove at Edinburg’s Cats Stadium this Friday, Nov. 11.

The regular season came to a disappointing end for the Tarpons at Rio Hondo last week, when Port Isabel lost, 35-21, to the Bobcats. With the win Rio Hondo won the undisputed District 32-3A title and ended the regular season with a 4-1 district record and a 7-3 record overall. The Tarpons finished in a second-place tie with Grulla with a 3-2 district record and 6-4 overall.

With the score tied at seven, the Tarpons fumbled the ball away in Bobcat territory on the first series of the third quarter. Rio Hondo needed only five plays to score and take a 14-7 lead. The home team got the ball right back when the Tarpons fumbled the ensuing kick-off, and the ‘Cats scored again to go up 21-7.
