A beloved holiday tradition, George Frederic Handel’s Messiah returns to the Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.
Handel’s Messiah continues the Signature Series and is a holiday gift to the community, supported by the University of Texas at Brownsville, the Brownsville Independent School District and Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts.
A full orchestra joins 120 singers from BISD and the Bravo Opera Company across the Rio Grande Valley to perform and sing Handel’s classic masterpiece, one of the most popular works in western choral literature.
“The Messiah used to be a Christmas tradition in Brownsville for many years,” said BSPA President George Ramirez. “We intend to maintain this yearly tradition every Christmas season in Brownsville from now on. We want to make this truly a family event, affordable to all.”
After a successful inaugural run, the Signature Series promises both a diverse range of performances and the same dedication to excellence that patrons have come to expect at the Arts Center, the university’s state-of-the-art new performance hall.
“The year 2012 has something for everyone, including dance, world music, jazz, family entertainment, and the best mariachi group in the world – all at surprisingly affordable prices,” said Dr. Daniel Barnard, Arts Center Director.
The schedule of performances is listed as follows:
• Ladysmith Black Mambazo –Wednesday, Jan.18.
• Imago Theatre Company –Wednesday, Feb. 8
• Mariachi Vargas – Sunday, Feb.26
• Raul Midón, guitarist and singer – Friday, March 2
• Imani Winds and Boston Brass, “Sketches of Spain” and “Porgy and Bess” – Friday, April 13
All performances are in the Arts Center and are at 7:30 p.m., except for Mariachi Vargas which will be at 6 p.m.
