TarponsThe first powerlifting meet of the season was held last Friday at Tarpon Gym. The Lady Tarpons placed second in the final team standings, the Tarpons were fifth, and both teams had an individual champion.

“It was a good overall performance,” head powerlifting coach Justin Stumbaugh said on Saturday. “We have some first-timers and also some kids who have been here before and know what’s going on.” Coach Stumbaugh believes in not necessarily going all out in the first meet of the season. Even so, four Tarpon lifters registered personal bests with their total lifts.

Jerry Lopez, who competes in the 114-pound class, took second place with a total lift of 940 pounds. His previous personal best of 900 pounds was achieved at the 2011 state meet, at which he earned a silver medal for second place. “He came in good shape,” Stumbaugh said.
