The mayor and commissioners in the City of Port Isabel could receive extended terms, with a higher compensation/stipend, through a resolution of the city charter, and a special election on the ballot in May.
In a special meeting held on Wednesday, Feb. 15, the city commissioners held a discussion and potential action to approve resolution 02-15-12-02, establishing procedures for a special election. The purpose would be to establish an amendment of the Home Rule Charter (item5).
City Manager Edward Meza said, “We are looking to amend three items: a stipend increase for the commissioners, a term increase from two to three years, and the freedom to designate voting schedules for the city.”
