BREAKING: Ekberg named director at SPI Convention and Visitor’s Bureau

The City of South Padre Island announced Friday the hiring of Lacey Ekberg as the SPI Convention and Visitors Bureau Director. She will begin her tenure on May 14.

Ekberg’s educational background includes an associate degree in Psychology and Hotel/Restaurant Management, a BA in marketing from Boise State University and a BA in business law from the University of California, Berkeley.

Ekberg holds a wide range of certifications in the fields of economic development and tourism. Her career spans many disciplines beginning with Fox Sports where she worked on contract negotiations with the NFL, MLB and NHL and participated in the coordination of two Super Bowls. She has served as an Executive Director for Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Commissions in several jurisdictions and most recently served as the Executive Director for the Duplin County Events Center in North Carolina.

“I am really looking forward to the energy and creative ideas that Lacey will bring to the City of South Padre Island,” said SPI Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton, Jr.

Mayor Pinkerton, Bill Donahue, Barry Patel, Mike Bigelow, Rick Vasquez and Steve Atkins served on the recruitment panel.

“We look forward to Lacey’s ability to enhance convention sales and to promote special events on the Island,” said City Manager Joni Clarke.

“Lacey has a vibrant personality and enjoys riding horses and Harley Davidson motor cycles. We welcome Lacey to the Community of South Padre Island,” Clarke said.

The City of South Padre Island will be hosting a reception for Ekberg to introduce her to the community on Wednesday, May 16 at 4 p.m. on the second floor of City Hall located at 4601 Padre Blvd. The public is invited to welcome Ms. Ekberg.
