Sheriff: Nolan admits to killing puppies

Special to the PRESS

emergency-lightsLOS FRESNOS – The man accused of killing three puppies turned himself in to authorities on Friday.

According to Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio, Los Fresnos resident John Paul Nolan, 56, gave a voluntary confession on Thursday and informed the arresting officers that there was no need for a warrant because he would be turning himself in the following day.

On Friday, Lucio said Nolan, who is reportedly the owner of Harley’s Country Store in Bayview, turned himself in at 12:30 p.m.

The sheriff said that Nolan had admitted to taking the puppies to a canal north of Los Fresnos, where he shot all three with a .9 mm handgun and allegedly threw them in a ditch.

“He said he did it because they were sick,” said Lucio, “but that is no reason to do what he did.”

Lucio also stated that Nolan had the option of contacting animal control. “That is what they are here for,” Lucio said.

Nolan is being charged with three counts of cruelty to a non-livestock animal, a state jail felony. He is scheduled to be arraigned at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
