Tarps, Lady Tarps score honors

basketballSix Port Isabel High basketball players have been named to the 2013 All-District 32-3A first teams.

For Coach Alan Ward’s Lady Tarpons squad Kelcie Swink was named to the All-District first team and Alex Martinez was named Newcomer of the Year. Swink and Martinez were both unanimous selections.

Three of boys’ head basketball coach Al Senteno’s players were named to the first team as well. These include Zach Reeves, Jimmy Puentes, and Kieler Gentry. DeMarkus Clark was honored as the Newcomer of the Year.

Lady Tarpon players named to the second team All-District include Flor Gonzalez and Cheyenne Allgood, and Cecily Niles, Alliya Stukey, and Ana Loza made the Honorable Mention List.

For the Tarpons, Isaiah Martinez and Saul Ochoa made the second team and Austin Bailey and Jose “Gordo” Garza made honorable mention.

“The team showed commitment and toughness, overcoming a late start and several injuries to return to the playoffs after a year’s absence,” Coach Alan Ward said.

“They’re all deserving of the accolades they received,” Coach Senteno said. “They worked hard and the best get recognized.”

Hard work in the classroom is recognized as well. Eight of the aforementioned players were also honored for their scholastic achievements. Kelcie Swink, Miranda Vogel, Cecily Niles, Taryn Reeves, Alliya Stukey, and Cheyenne Allgood were all named to the Academic All-District list. Honored as well by the district for their classroom excellence were Zach Reeves and Kieler Gentry.

Named also to the Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State lists were Allgood, first team, and Stukey, honorable mention. Reeves and Gentry also qualified for the first team Academic All-State.
