WEB EXCLUSIVE: Market analysis on Centre presented

South Padre IslandThe South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau Transition Board held a regular meeting Wednesday.

A market analysis by Charlie Johnson was presented to the board. Johnson updated a report done in 2005 and recommended the convention center expand to 40,000 square foot exhibit space and to add a 10,000 ballroom to the facility. He said he also recommends the rooms to be multipurpose.

Gignac Architects presented initial design concepts for the Renovation and Expansion of the Convention Centre Project. Gignac presented several drawings with different options for placement of new structures and different expansion options for the board to review.

Sandcastle Days has changed dates from October to Labor Day weekend to help maximize the event. A request for funding will be submitted for the event.

Information Technology consultant Paul Holthusen clarified his role with the CVB to the board, currently he is contracted for 16 hours a week. The board would like to extend his time for efforts regarding the CVB’s website upkeep.

The board has created a subcommittee to formulate a new marketing plan for the CVB. The board will seek professional consulting when their strategy is realized.

Contracts for acts to perform on Memorial Day have been issued and should be ready before the next scheduled meeting of the Transition Board. Tickets for the concert will be $35 for the first night $45 for the second and $70 for a combination of the two.

  1. No Bikefest and no SandCastle Days. Looks like there will be tumbleweeds in the streets around here come October.
