Symphony in the Park slated May 4

Special to the Parade

Brownsville Literacy Center’s 15th Annual Symphony in the Park will be held on Saturday, May 4 at Washington Park.

The gate opens at 5 p.m. to “Swing into Literacy,” the theme for this year’s exciting family fun event featuring the Dean Canty Big Band.

Before the orchestra takes the stage, the audience will enjoy performances by youngsters in the B-SMART Orchestra and the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College Music Academy. Also taking the stage will be the Taffelmusik Quartet, an ensemble of university students; and the Los Fresnos High School Jazz Band will keep the music alive during intermission with some snappy selections.

Continuing its popularity with parents and children, Symphony will again include Play Day at Symphony under the direction of Dr. Georgianna Duarte and her UTB and TSC early childhood studies students.

The Boogie Woogie auction will be open throughout the evening, giving everyone time to peruse the tempting selections.

Sponsors will be welcomed to the popular Taste of Symphony VIP tent, where heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be provided.

The evening’s entertainment lineup is as follows:

5:30-6:30 p.m. – B-SMART Orchestra and UTB Music Academy Students

6:30-7 p.m. – Taffelmusik Quartet

7-8 p.m. – Dean Canty Big Band

8-8:30 p.m. – Los Fresnos High School Jazz Band

8:30-9:30 p.m. – Dean Canty Big Band

Concertgoers are encouraged to arrive early to set up their blankets, lawn chairs and picnics. Light snacks and cold drinks will be available for purchase throughout the evening.

Symphony in the Park benefits Brownsville Literacy Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving reading and writing competency in our area through appropriate and accessible educational programs. All funds raised from Symphony will help support BLC’s programs such as English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) and the Family Literacy Program for preschool-age children and their parents.
