UPDATE: Blackout left over 8,000 people without power

A major power outage that occurred Monday morning reportedly affected 8,100 American Electric Power Texas customers at the peak of the outage.

The outage hit Port Isabel with a minor impact on South Padre Island and the Long Island Village area. The first outage began shortly before 10 a.m. due to an equipment failure at the AEP substation on Garcia Street in Port Isabel.

AEP Texas Manager of Community Affairs Frank Espinoza said the equipment failure needed to be repaired before all customers could be connected incrementally. Espinoza said some customers were connected by 11 a.m. until a second outage occurred around noon while AEP crews repaired the substation.

During the outage, officers with the Port Isabel Police Department took to the streets to direct traffic while traffic lights were down. PIPD Police Chief Gualberto “Wally” Gonzalez said the department maintains communication via a backup generator.

After hours without electricity, power was fully restored by 2:30 p.m.
