Officials with Sea Turtle Inc. (STI) announced this week that three Kemp’s Ridley nests have been found on the Island, officially signaling the start of nesting season on South Padre Island.
Around 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 12 ATV patroller Alex Echinberg found the first Kemp’s Ridley nest about 7 1/2 miles north of Beach Access No. 6. The mother was packing down the nest when Alex discovered her. Approximately 110 eggs were retrieved and moved to the corral to keep the eggs safe from predators.
