What began as a spirited conversation between friends Kirsten Zertuche and Marty Etheridge to determine the best caldo (broth) in the area manifested into the first of what is expected to be an annual Caldo Cook-off held this past Saturday at Harpoon’s Surf Bar & Grill on South Padre Island.

“Kirsten and Marty had a conversation at Corral Reef and they were trying to decide who makes the best caldo,” said DeeOnda Ahadi who acted as event host. “And they decided to have a contest and raise money for an organization, which, because the holidays coming, ended up being Blue Sunday for teens in foster care so they will have something for Christmas.”
