Monday evening, The Point Isabel Independent School District (PIISD) held a family meeting at the library of the Point Isabel High School. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) sent representatives to the meeting to share information about Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) which can be an important resource for many families in our community. Representatives from the Mexican Consulate in Brownsville also came to provide information about their services and how they can assist Mexican immigrants in the Valley.
Counselors from the high school welcomed the parents and students to the school. Because of the nature of the topics, the meeting was held primarily in Spanish with translation available if needed. GEAR UP facilitator Angela Delamar assisted with the meeting and shared her belief that college is for everyone, rather than only the top ten percent or honor roll students.
