The Port Isabel Lady Tarpons hoops squad was eliminated in the first round of the 2015 playoffs on Tuesday night by Corpus Christi West Oso. The final score of the bi-district contest, played at Riviera, was 47-36.
The game was close in the first half and Port Isabel took an early 2-0 lead and led again 15-14 with minutes to go till halftime.
“We were up 15-14 with about three minutes to go in the half,” head PI coach Blake Ramsey said Wednesday. “They stole the ball and closed the half with a 4-0 run and they were up by three.”
The Lady Bears led 9-6 at the end of a quarter of play, 18-15 at the half, and 33-23 at the end of three quarters.
Port Isabel went in with a good game plan and the confidence that it could work. “We came out in the first half and really executed our game plan by slowing down the game,” Ramsey said. “We went to see them play and knew they were a beatable team. I think our game plan flustered them and was working.”
The Lady Tarpons end the season with a 17-14 record overall. Their regular season district record was 7-7 which tied them for fourth place in the final standings with Hidalgo. The top four teams make the playoffs and the Lady Tarpons got the fourth playoff spot by beating the Lady Pirates, 38-35, in a play-in game last Friday.
Against West Oso Alex Martinez led the team with 11 points and got five steals. The rest of the team’s points were all scored by Averie Colunga, nine; Karina Vela, eight; and Kelcie Swink, eight. Vela contributed eight rebounds and Swink added six.
The program will lose six seniors to graduation in the spring, including Colunga, Swink, Marlen Flores, Cecily Niles, Mireya Almaraz, and Kacy Chavez.
Preparations for next season will involve some summer activities. “We’ll be involved with summer leagues and different camps and such,” said Coach Ramsey.
