Port Isabel Channel, basin to be dredged

The ports of Port Isabel, Harlingen and Port Mansfield announced they have received funds to undergo much needed maintenance dredging.

The funds were distributed to the Army Corps of Engineers via an appropriation in the so-called “CRomnibus Bill” (a combination of the Continuing Resolution and an omnibus spending bill) which was passed by Congress in late 2014. Dispersal of the funds was left to the discretion of the Corps. Representatives from the three districts, along with Congressman Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville), met with “the Corps District, Division and Headquarters to explain the need for dredging their respective channels,” according to a statement released on behalf of the districts.

“Congressman Vela and his staff were tireless in their efforts on behalf of the Port of Harlingen. … They listened to our needs and went to work to get us what we had to have,” said Port of Harlingen Chairman Alan Johnson in the statement.

Steven B. Bearden, port director for the Port Isabel – San Benito (PISB) Navigation District echoed those sentiments saying, “We’re excited that we’re getting it (funded). And we’re excited that Congressman Vela  is the one… the reason we got the money — us, Harlingen and Port Mansfield — is because of Congressman Vela’s outreach to the Corps of Engineers.”

What is the update on this? I am hoping the entrance to Modern Venice is dredged soon. Thanks.
