The Port Isabel Commission proclaimed the month of April as Autism Awareness Month at Monday’s special meeting. The Commission also welcomed several children and their parents present at City Hall who participated in the Run/Walk for Autism held this past Saturday at Beulah Lee Park. Mayor Joe E. Vega presented the walk/run participants and their supervisors with a framed acknowledgment commemorating the occasion. The lighthouse was lit blue earlier this month in support of autism awareness and will remain so for the whole month.
“I want to thank everyone who participated in promoting this here,” said Mayor Vega. “Especially the parents who work so hard in promoting awareness.”
Also present were several local motorcyclists who were happy to see the city commission proclaim the month of May as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month. The bikers, many part of the group Bikers for Christ, also were presented with a framed acknowledgement commemorating the newly passed proclamation.
“We are urging all of our community to become aware of the inherent danger involved in operated a motorcycle,” said Mayor Vega. “And give the operator the respect on the road they deserve.”
