Island ready to regulate short term rentals

Special to the PRESS

City of South Padre Island Ordinance No. 15-‐03 (Short Term Rental Permit) will go into

effect June 15, 2015 and a final deadline of July 1, 2015 to be compliant.

South  Padre  Island,  TX  –  June  3,  2015:    Three  training  workshops  were  held  and

Ordinance  15-‐03  notifications  have  been  included  in  City  issued  newsletters  and  social

media  outlets,  in  addition  to  local  realtors  and  title  companies.  In  anticipation  of  the  July

1 deadline, City of South Padre Island staff will be notifying by mail and/or e-‐mail any property owners who are advertising their rental units without charging Hotel Occupancy Tax. Properties must be registered with the State of Texas Comptroller and MuniServices, as well as acquire their City of South Padre Island Short Term Rental Permit in order to comply with Ordinance No. 15-‐03. Staff will now focus on working with homeowners’ associations, property management groups and realtors.

The Short Term Rental Permit number must be posted on all advertising.  In addition to the

enforcement and collection of Hotel Occupancy Tax, the ordinance is intended to bring credibility to the rental marketplace by deterring fraudulent listings, and to assist City authorities in enforcing our quality of life ordinances: noise, disturbance and fire code occupancy. Additional information and online registration is available at http://myspi.org/hottax.  The final compliance date is July 1, 2015.  For questions on how you  can  register  your  unit  you  may  call  Nancy  Botello:  (956)  761-‐8382   or  Email: HotTax@SoPadre.com
