Writer’s Block: Giving Thanks

If you’ve driven past downtown Port Isabel lately, you may have noticed the glow of hundreds of Christmas lights decorating the trees and the pavilion at Beulah Park.

All over the Valley people are bustling about “decking the halls,” so to speak, in celebration of the holiday season. And while many folks enjoy a few extra days off during this time of year, for others, the holidays mean a ramping up of activities and work. November and December spell the busy season. That’s true to a certain extent in the media industry, as well.

From covering community holiday events, to rushing to meet earlier deadlines, to helping letters get to Santa, there’s hardly a moment to pause. But it’s at precisely these moments when a thought hovers in the back of my mind, always on the edge of consciousness – and that thought is one of thankfulness.

It is truly a joy and a privilege to be busy. Think about it for a second. If you’re busy with work, and family and holiday gatherings among friends, then that means you are a person upon whom many blessings have been bestowed. I speak often of my parents in this column, and this is another moment where one of the lessons they taught me surfaces clearly to the forefront of my mind: that wealth isn’t measured by the number of zeroes in your bank account, but by the countless intangibles money can’t buy.

Wealth is measured by the people you love and who love you in return. It is measured in the small kindnesses we share with our neighbors and that are shared with us. It is measured in the pride of a job well done. It is measured in puppy dog kisses and purring kittens. It is measured in the simple joy of taking in the crisp morning air.

By those measures and many more, we are a wealthy lot, indeed, reader. And given the season, I would like to express my thanks to you.

Many of you have taken a moment out of your day to call, write or even visit us at the Press and Parade offices to share your comments, concerns and compliments. I’m always thankful for the opportunity to learn more about the community we serve and am looking forward to meeting with more of you in the future.

Thank you for your continued readership, and Happy Thanksgiving! Feel free to share what you’re thankful for this year by visiting us online at www.portisabelsouthpadre.com.
