This year, the South Padre Island Keep SPI Beautiful Committee (KSPIB) broadened their efforts and began to focus on collaboration with like-minded groups in the area like Respeta Tu Playa and the Surfrider Foundation. This month, KSPIB agreed to support Sea Turtle, Inc. in their grant application to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to focus on marine debris prevention on South Padre Island.

Kat Lillie, assistant curator at Sea Turtle, Inc., came to the committee to request a letter of support for their application for the NOAA Marine Debris Prevention grant. Marine debris is a very serious issue for ocean animals who often consume or are entangled in plastic debris. In addition, keeping the beach clean is a significant part of the beautification of South Padre Island.
