The Port Isabel Lady Tarpons lost to the Lady Hawks of Zapata, 57-42, in a District 32-4A basketball game Tuesday at Tarpon Gym.
Port Isabel drops to 2-6 in district play with the loss, and is tied for sixth place in the standings with Raymondville. Zapata improves to 7-1 and retains sole possession of first place.
It was a close contest in the first half as the Lady Tarpons trailed 9-7 at the end of a quarter of play and 21-17 at the half.
P.I. closed within two, 21-19, to start the second half, but Zapata dropped in four three-pointers and led 41-28 at the start of the fourth. Port Isabel could get no closer than 10 points, 38-48, after that. The Lady Hawks scored the next nine points before the home team got two late buckets, and that was a final, 57-42.
“We played a good first half, then – which has been the story of our season – came out flat in the third quarter,” P.I. head Coach Blake Ramsey said after the game. Our girls never gave up but it gets to a point where that’s not enough. We need to be more consistent and play a full game.”
Junior Jasmine Saldivar led the team in scoring with 13 points and six steals. Senior team captain Alex Martinez dropped in nine points, and also had a team-leading seven rebounds and made three steals. Karina Vela blocked three shots and grabbed six boards. Freshman Sabrina Garza scored eight points and Victoria Macias had five.
The Port Isabel freshmen team won, 36-34, and improves to 3-4 in district play. The Lady Tarpons JV group also won, 32-26 and is now 8-1 in district.
Last Friday, at home against La Feria, the P.I. freshmen lost 27-24. The JV team won 43-26 and the varsity lost 52-41.
The team will be on the road for their next two engagements with Rio Hondo this Friday, and Raymondville next Tuesday, Jan. 26th. The Lady Tarpons will return home the following Friday, the 29th, when Grulla will visit Tarpon Gym.
