Two months ago, former Indian Lake Police Chief John Chambers was found guilty on 14 charges of tampering with government records. He was given a five year probation sentence and stripped of his law enforcement license. To the surprise of many, however, Chambers maintained his position as a candidate for Cameron County Sheriff even after his conviction, saying that the appeal of his conviction made him eligible to run. Then, Chambers shocked many more when he picked up more votes than any other Republican candidate running for Cameron County Sheriff, resulting in a run-off between him and Victor Cortez.
However, last Thursday, Morgan Graham, chairman of the Cameron County Republican Party, released a statement declaring Chambers ineligible for the run-off and replacing him with former South Padre Island Chief of Police Robert Rodriguez, who finished third in the Republican primary.
