Port Isabel High senior athlete John Ray Martinez has qualified for the state powerlifting meet. He made it by registering a total lift of 1,400 pounds at last weekend’s regional meet in Corpus Christi.
The top two lifters in each weight class automatically qualify for state competition, and Martinez’s total lift amount tied him for second place with three other lifters in the final standings of the 198-pound division. The tiebreaker is body weight and Martinez had weighed in at 196.8 pounds, which was second-heaviest of the four. The lightest was Geronimo Navarro’s Jared Leal, who tipped the scales the day before at 189.8 pounds, so Leal was the second-place finisher and automatic state qualifier.
