During their meeting Wednesday morning, the Parks, Recreation, and Beautification Committee took time to do a walkthrough of the new South Padre Island Community Center and reviewed some of the proposed guidelines for use.

Members were pleased with the quality of construction on the facility. Just as discussion began regarding guidelines and fees, City Councilwoman Alita Bagley raised the question, or concern rather, about whether the building was to be used as a community center for public activities or an event center that could be rented out. Primary concerns were regarding the availability of the space for community events rather than birthday parties and receptions as well as longevity of the building. Ultimately, the committee determined that it should be for the community. The Convention Centre and Birding and Nature Center were cited as great event center options.

The committee considered key points for the reservation policy. Regular hours of operation are expected to be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with afterhours available pending approval by city staff.
